PEAFOWL GENETICS---ITS NO SECRET ANYMORE
THE INDIA BLUE GENE (including black shoulder and white)
BASIC STUFF:
A few terms and abbreviations needed to understand these pages.

'D'--Dominant---a dominant gene---only one copy of a 'D' gene is needed for that trait to be seen.
Dominant genes will ALWAYS be in capital letters.
'r'--recessive---a recessive gene---two copies of a 'r' gene are needed for that trait to be seen.
recessive genes will ALWAYS be in lower case.
'Id'--Incomplete dominant---a blending of the two.---"id" genes will express themselves in various ways.
I will indicate if and when an 'Id' gene is being discussed.
GENOTYPE---this is the genetic make-up of the bird.
PHENOTYPE---this is what the bird looks like---physically.
Heterozygous---the bird has 2 different genes. (Bb, BT, Bc, etc.)
Homozygous----the bird has 2 identical copies. (BB, bb, TT, etc.)

This is a breeding of an India blue to an India blue.
Each bird receives 1 gene from each parent.
In peafowl, Blue (B) is dominant.
This is a breeding of b.s. to b.s. (bb x bb) all 'r' genes.
This works the same as with the india blues
because each parent is homozygous bb.
BB X BB= 100% BB
blue x blue
GENOTYPE = 100% homozygous Dominant BB
PHENOTYPE= 100% India blue

bb x bb= 100% bb
b.s. x b.s.
GENOTYPE=100% homozygous recessive bb
PHENOTYPE=100% black shoulder
Now, let's cross a Bb to a Bb.
This is heterozygous blue/b.s. to heterozygous blue/b.s.
Each parent bird has one Dominant gene
and one recessive gene
This is a breeding of an India blue to a black
shoulder.
The black shoulder is a recessive trait.
You need 2 b genes to get black shoulder.
Bb X Bb=
GENOTYPE=25% BB 50%Bb 25%bb
PHENOTYPE= 75% blue 25% b.s.
BB= homozygous dominant india blue
Bb= heterozygous india blue
bb= homozygous recessive black shoulder
From this cross we got 3 types of birds...(BB, Bb,bb)
and two colors...blue and b.s.
BB X bb=100% Bb
blue x b.s.
GENOTYPE= 100% heterozygeous blue/b.s. (Bb)
PHENOTYPE=100% India blue.
These birds 'look' india blue, because the 'B'
gene is dominant but, they carry one hidden
gene for b.s.

Now let's try Bb x bb
This will be a breeding of the heterozygous blue (Bb)
with a homozygous (pure) black shoulder (bb)
Three recessive 'b' genes involved.

Bb X bb=
GENOTYPE=50%Bb 50%bb
PHENOTYPE=50% blue 50% b.s.
Bb= heterozygous india blue
bb= homozygous recessive black shoulder
Notice we didn't get any homozygous BB
blues in this example.

WHITE
At one time or another, the pure white peafowl is always everyones favorite.
The white peafowl is NOT albino.
It is an incomplete dominant mutation of the India Blue.
We will refer to the white gene as 'T'. ('W' has already been taken)
Homozygous india blue (BB) to a homozygous white (TT)
White is Id (incomplete dominant),
so some new things will happen
This will be a white to white mating.
Both parents are TT, homozygous (pure) white.

BB X TT=
GENOTYPE= 100% BT
PHENOTYPE= 100% hetero india blue, with white flight feathers
Because the white is Id, it will let you know it's there by showing up
in a minimal way.
The india blue colored bird will have white flight feathers or
sometimes a white throat patch.
TT X TT= 100% TT
GENOTYPE= 100% homozygous TT
PHENOTYPE= 100% white
Now we will use those BT birds.
Mate a BT to a BT.
Each parent is heterozygous.
One dominant 'B' gene, and one Id 'T' gene.
Mate a BT to a TT.
You now have 3 'T' genes to work with.
Do you think you'll get more whites?

PHENOTYPE=25% blue 50% blue w/w 25% white
BB- homozygous India blue
BT- heterozygous India blue w/ white f.f.
